Producing a gushing amount of influential and pioneering artists over the years, Detroit Rock City’s hottest export at the moment are garage rockers the WHITE STRIPES, who have literally generated a feeding frenzy in the music world in the last year. With everyone clambering over themselves to get a piece of raunchy raw blistering action from the duo, the close-knit Detroit garage rock community has once again been thrown into the spotlight. Most of the bands are centred in the hub of it all, being signed to the kick-ass Sympathy For The Record Industry label, and so deservedly, attention is finally also being paid to the incredible likes of The Dirtbombs, Detroit Cobras, The Come-Ons and The Von Bondies as well. Detroit rock shines again!
The White Stripes have been the hottest totties on the UK block in recent months where they have followed hot on the revered heels of fellow Americans The Strokes. They have quickly gained the adulation of the UK media and become darlings of the NME with front cover attention, as well as feature articles in UK daily newspapers including the Times who called them “The best things since Hendrix”
And rightfully so. After releasing, two wailing sink-your-teeth-to-the-bone rock gems, WHITE STRIPES and DE STIJL, brother and sister Jack and Meg prove you don’t need a lot of equipment and people to make one hell of a brilliant sonic explosion. And despite all the rabid media attention, the twosome have remained true to themselves and their approach to straight up pure and simple rock’n'roll that got them to this point in the first place. Now being released through XL Recordings for the rest of the world, The Stripes look set now more than ever, to stir things up with their third and latest album, WHITE BLOOD CELLS.
With a hypnotic blend of viciousness and sweetness, they roll out tales of love and betrayal in a bolder and tighter fashion than on their previous albums, while never giving it enough polish for it to lose its true Stripes’ flavour and attitude. From the likes of Fell In Love With a Girl to I’m Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman; from to Offend in Every Way to I Think I Smell a Rat, the duo’s ability to please their old fans while coming up with enough surprises to win new ones, will see WHITE BLOOD CELLS named as their best album yet.
